Like me, you may be wondering what the beep oil swishing is? I was a few years ago anyway. No doubt oil swishing is the newest craze out there and for good reason.
Oil swishing or pulling has been used for thousands of years to help minimize the bacteria growth in the mouth. It's an authentic health practice that seems to making headlines today.
So what's the big deal?
According to Prevention magazine, oil pulling is an ancient technique used to clean your mouth and teeth where you place a teaspoon of coconut oil or other essential organic oil into your mouth and swish it around like you would a mouthwash for about 20 minutes or so. That's how long it takes for the medicinal benefits to take effect.
Oil pulling has been around for centuries, we just haven't paid any attention to it until now. History dictates this cleansing method is derived from Ayurveda medicine, rewinding back more than three thousand years in India.
Health enthusiast got a hold of it and global awareness is booming.
The United States is a superpower but when it comes to oil swishing we are way behind. Other countries, particularly in the Mediterranean, use it as a daily practice. In Italy it's normal to oil pull 3 times a day.
The favorite oil to use in the Mediterranean is olive oil. Of course it's got to be in its purest form or you lose any health benefit.
Bacteria reduction in the mouth is the number one practical use for this practice. Scientists have discovered evidence the enzymes in coconut oil for instance, will help to slow or eliminate the growth of bad bacteria in saliva. Of course there is some controversy because the "evidence" isn't rock solid.
However, there is enough supporting evidence for the world to take this practice by storm and start applying.
By swishing virgin oil in your mouth and spitting it out, you will pull the bacteria off your teeth and this means you're getting rid of some of the free radicals that are looking to create trouble. Makes sense to me.
VIP - This swishing technique does not take the place of your dentist. It's a preventative measure that may help you keep your teeth and mouth clean, but it's not guaranteed powerful enough to miraculous keep all dental hygiene issues at bay, according to Huffington Post experts.
Fact - Tooth decay is a silent disease and your decay isn't going away until a dentist removes it. Not to mention the fact it's very important for you to have a dental hygienist clean the tartar and buildup off your teeth on a regular basis to help prevent cavities.
Add oil swishing to this routine and you're only going to get better results.
Ok magazine says oil swishing also whitens teeth over time. This is the all-natural route to getting those pearly whites just a little bit whiter. This technique also may help deter migraines, headaches, asthma, arthritis, and the common cold.
Depending on your circumstance, it may take just a few days to see rustles or weeks. This really depends on the strength of your immune system. Just make sure you never swallow the oil. It's completely safe if you rinse and spit.
