Cold-Pressed, Unfiltered Milk Thistle Oil
Organic Milk Thistle Seed Oil is used as a supplement to support the liver and digestive system. The oil has a mild taste and is good for finished dishes and smoothies. In cosmetics milk thistle oil is often used because of its high content of linolein acid. The oil is mixed with more stable oils like organic jojoba due to its short shelf life.
- The raw oil is being pressed in small batches.
- After pressing the oil sludge settles to the bottom of the oil barrel.
- The fresh oil can now be carefully decanted into bottles.
- Followed by capping and proper labeling.

Cold Pressing Technique
At Ostro Organics we use a modern low-pressure screw press to extract the oil from certified organic milk thistle seeds. Focusing on low pressure and low heat extraction. Higher heat means higher yield but also more alteration when it comes to its molecular structure. At Ostro Organics, we press every oil at a different heat point. Ranging from 9° to 29° degrees Celsius.
Ostro Organics presses oils under very low pressure and minimal temperatures. Currently ranging between 9° and 29° Celsius. Resulting in low yield oil extraction, obtaining a yield of roughly 55% depending on the oil content of the milk thistle seed.
Higher yields could be reached by applying industry standards including more pressure, heat, solvents and adding other agents to the extraction process.
When consuming Ostro Organics milk thistle seed oil in this pure, fresh, natural and real form, you will NOT be consuming hydrogenated fats or trans fatty acids.

Milk thistle seed oil is often promoted for its liver-protecting effects.
It’s regularly used as a complementary therapy by people who have liver damage due to conditions like alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis and even liver cancer ( Source, Source, Source).
Studies have shown improvements in liver function in people with liver diseases who have taken a milk thistle supplement, suggesting it could help reduce liver inflammation and liver damage (Trusted Source).
Although more research is needed on how it works, milk thistle is thought to reduce damage to the liver caused by free radicals, which are produced when your liver metabolizes toxic substances.
One study also found that it may slightly extend the life expectancy of people with cirrhosis of the liver due to alcoholic liver disease (Trusted Source).
However, the results from studies have been mixed, and not all have found milk thistle products to have a beneficial effect on liver disease.
And although milk thistle is commonly used as a complementary therapy for people with liver diseases, there’s currently no evidence that it can prevent you from getting these conditions, especially if you have an unhealthy lifestyle.
Summary Milk thistle may help protect the liver against damage caused by disease or poisoning, though more research is needed.
In fact, in studies where high doses were used for long periods, only about 1% of people experienced side effects (Trusted Source).
When reported, side effects for milk thistle are generally gut disturbances like diarrhea, nausea or bloating.
Some people are advised to be cautious when taking milk thistle. These include:
- Pregnant women: There is no data on its safety in pregnant women, so they are usually advised to avoid this supplement.
- Those allergic to the plant: Milk thistle may cause an allergic reaction in people who are allergic to the Asteraceae/Compositae family of plants.
- People with diabetes: The blood sugar-lowering effects of milk thistle may put people with diabetes at risk of low blood sugar.
- Those with certain conditions: Milk thistle can have estrogenic effects, which may worsen hormone-sensitive conditions, including some types of breast cancer.
Summary Milk thistle is generally considered safe. Nevertheless, pregnant women, those allergic to the Asteraceae family of plants, those with diabetes and anyone with an estrogen-sensitive condition should seek medical advice before taking it.
Milk Thistle Seed Oil for the Skin
New studies are being conducted to evaluate its efficacy in human skin cells. Just as it appears to repair and promote rejuvenation of other organ cells, the results look promising. What’s more, the science points to Milk Thistle actually protecting cells from future damage!
Many parallels exist between your skin and liver. As the largest organ of your body, your skin naturally absorbs large amounts of what you place on it. And, just like the filtering process of the liver, your skin excretes toxins through your sweat. The appearance of your skin, therefore, is a good indicator of your internal health. Acne, eczema, excess oil and dryness may all be indicators that your liver is not functioning as well as it could be. Milk Thistle can assist with detoxification to make the liver run more smoothly. In turn, skin may clear up and the anti-inflammatory properties of Milk Thistle may calm skin irritation and inflation.
