Ingredients

2 cups flour
1 1/4 C almond milk
ALMOST 1 1/3 cup sugar
3 large eggs, room temp
1.5 tsp salt
1.5 tbsp fresh orange zest
0.5 tsp baking soda
1/4 C fresh orange juice
0.5 tsp baking powder
1/4 C Grand Marnier or sherry
1 1/3 C Ostro Organics Poppy Seed Oil or Ostro Organics raw Black Sesame Seed Oil

Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan ; line bottom of pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl whisk together poppy seed oil, milk, eggs, orange zest, orange juice and Grand Marnier.
  3. Whisk flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and baking powder in large mixing bowl.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for one hour OR bake until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean,
  7. Let cool in pan for 30 minutes before running knife around outside and taking out of pan.

Ostro’s Poppy Seed Oil Cake

This simple yet delicious Poppy Seed Oil Cake is a staple in our house! It’s a light and barely sweet cake that’s perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack. A final brush or drizzle of fresh hazelnut oil just before serving brings the fruity flavor to the front of your palate as soon as you take your first bite. Serves well with ice cream, sorbets and fresh fruit!

 

Joanne’s Tip:

I like to serve this refreshing cake with fresh fruit like strawberries and blue berries. Topped with a bit of hazelnut or walnut oil and coconut based whipping cream.

This Poppy Seed Oil Cake keeps very well. Wrap it and store it in the fridge or freeze a couple of pieces if you’re leaving town.
